Planning for what a film leaves behind

The Independent Film Sustainability Handbook

Giving through production needs time, people and a budget. The BFI, BBC Film and Film4 launched a free handbook developed with Picture Zero, drawing on independent-film pilots that included reused scenery and donations of usable materials at wrap. On A Town in Nova Scotia, surplus materials went to a Liverpool homelessness charity. The BFI also announced up to £6,000 per film for sustainability consultants and a requirement for future BFI Filmmaking Fund fiction features to budget for a Sustainability Assistant. For the Ledger, the possibility is structural: community benefit can become a planned responsibility within the making of a film.
